Carlos Slim Foundation Scholars Program

 
Carlos Slim at GW The Office of International Programs will be home to the new Slim Scholars Program, in cooperation with the Carlos Slim Foundation. Slated to begin in spring semester of 2013, the program will bring selected graduates of Mexican universities to GW to pursue master's degrees at the School of Business, School of Engineering and Applied Science, or Elliott School of International Affairs. Fulbright Nehru Delegation Visit

 
Fulbright-Nehru International Education Administrators SeminarIn October, Donna Scarboro, associate provost for International Programs, joined Susan Karamanian, associate dean for International and Comparative Legal Studies; Deepa Ollapally, associate director of the Sigur Center for Asian Studies;and Rakesh Kumar,Catherine Birch McCormick Chair, professor and chairman, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, in welcoming the Fulbright-Nehru International Education Administrators Seminar delegation to GW for the second year. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, the seminar is offered in cooperation with the United States-India Educational Foundation. While at GW the group toured the Law School, visited the Sigur Center, and engaged in discussions on accreditation, curriculum, faculty and student exchange, study abroad, research collaboration, and issues of higher education in India.
 

Young Scientists' Forum

 
Young Scientist's ForumGW faculty members participated in the U.S.-China Young Scientist Forum held on October 18 at the U.S. Department of State. The forum is offered by the Department of State in an effort to promote and support cross-continent connections and collaboration in the sciences. This was the first forum to involve U.S. and Chinese faculty members exploring research interests together. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Jonathan Margolis and Wang Qiang, Director, Division of Americas and Oceania, Ministry of Science and Technology, People’s Republic of China, addressed the group. Discussion centered on challenges faced by faculty on both sides in collaborative research and publication. GW participants included professors Hao Howie Huang (Electrical and Computer Engineering), Chunlei Liang (Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering) Adelina Voutchkova (Chemistry), and Damien O’Halloran (Biological Sciences).
 

Koobi Fora Field School, Kenya, and GW’s Center for the Advanced Study of Hominid Paleobiology join in collaboration

Farah, director of the National Museums of KenyaOn November 10, 2012, GW moved a step closer to establishing a formal relationship with Koobi Fora Field School in Kenya that will create study abroad and research opportunities in the field of paleoanthropology. GW President Steven Knapp and Dr. Idle O. Farah, director-general of the National Museums of Kenya, signed a letter of intent to initiate the collaboration between GW’s Center for the Advanced Study of Hominid Paleobiology and the National Museums of Kenya. GW faculty members join faculty from the University of Witwatersrand, University of Cape Town, Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Rutgers University, Coastal Carolina University and the Smithsonian Institution in this new project, which offers unparalleled opportunities for field research and student interaction abroad.
