Health Insurance

Short-Term Abroad participants are automatically enrolled in a mandatory insurance plan, GeoBlue. This insurance covers students only during the time they are abroad with the program. GeoBlue covers health insurance and repatriation, as well as medical, political and natural disaster evacuation. GeoBlue also provides coverage for accidents and sickness.

The George Washington University has contracted with GeoBlue to provide health insurance and worldwide assistance and evacuation services for all GW faculty, staff, and students traveling abroad for university-related business. The services provided by GeoBlue range from telephone advice and referrals to full-scale evacuation.

GeoBlue insurance is specifically designed for students studying abroad. GeoBlue provides health coverage for accidents, sickness, medical conditions that may arise, and emergency medical reunion. It covers students in any country overseas, except their country of citizenship.

Once enrolled, you will receive an email with login information and instructions for the GeoBlue website. You will also be required to print out a membership card that you should carry with you at all times. It includes your member ID number, coverage dates and the GeoBlue emergency telephone number, which can be called collect from anywhere in the world.
