Capital ExOJob Description

We are looking for fun and enthusiastic students to become volunteer student leaders for the Office of Study Abroad’s Spring 2020 semester Exchange Student Orientation (ExO).  ExO will be a week-long program (including an Orientation training for leaders on a Sunday) to help inbound international students acclimate to their new campus and home city. The most important point of this orientation is to make sure everyone, student leaders and international students alike, have fun. The Exchange Orientation will balance the necessary academic info sessions with fun evening outings and activities, as well as day trips outside of the city. Some of these trips could include: Smithsonian visits, Monuments by Moonlight tour, Potomac River cruise and tour of Mount Vernon, Capitol Building and Library of Congress tour, a snow tubing trip, and much more. Participating in the orientation will be a great way for GW students to make unique connections and friendships with students from all over the world like Australia, Japan, France, Argentina, South Korea, and several other countries.

ExO LeadersExpectations

Our ideal student leader will be enthusiastic, friendly, and outgoing. We want our student leaders to create a fun and comfortable environment in which our international students can build friendships with each other and with their group leaders. As an Exchange Student Orientation leader, you will be expected to lead your own small group while helping to direct and interact with the group at large. Student leaders will also be expected to act and lead responsibly as representatives not only of the Office for Study Abroad, but also The George Washington University.  There will be one or two in person meetings held during the Fall to get ready for the Spring 2020 orientation. A full day of leader training will be conducted the day prior to the start of orientation. Leaders will be expected to prepare some activities or short presentations, and respond to some emails prior to the actual orientation week.

Application Review Criteria Spring 18 ExO Leaders

The Office for Study Abroad will be reviewing applications on the basis of: enthusiasm for the orientation program, leadership qualities, international experience, and judicial standing. Most of all, we are looking for unique individuals who will have fun with the program while making sure the international students around them are also having fun. If your application is selected, you will be invited for a phone or in person interview, or if you are currently abroad, we will schedule a time for a Skype interview.

Important Interview Dates

Individual phone/Skype/in person interviews will be conducted prior to the Spring semester.

ExO Leader Training

All Exchange Orientation Leaders are expected to attend all mandatory training/meeting dates during Fall (via Skype, if abroad) as established by the GW Exchange Team. Additionally, ExO Leaders are expected to be available from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm everyday during the Spring 2020 orientation week, which will take place from Sunday, January 5th, 2020 through Friday, January 10th, 2020. The GW Exchange Team will arrange for leaders to move into campus housing on Sunday, January 5th, 2020.
