The School of Nursing aims to work collaboratively with OmniMed to provide a wide spectrum of health-related services and activities in this international community health experience. With expertise aligned with shared vision and goals, we expect a highly successful community health experience with an overarching goal to improve the health outcomes for individuals and communities served in the Mukono District, Uganda. The areas of focus for this trip may include screening for hypertension, maternal – child health, sanitation, nutrition, health education programs and training volunteer community health workers.

*The trips are highly competitive and there are a limited number of slots for each trip. Selection will be based on several factors including academic good standing, interest, language abilities, and space availability on each trip.
 
IMPORTANT! The nature of international medical work can be highly unpredictable and sometimes trips may be postponed or cancelled as a result of weather, political situations, disease or many other circumstances beyond our control. 
 
What will it Cost?
 
The cost of this trip is between $2000 - 2700, which includes in-country transportation, food, lodging and airfare. Please be aware that any vaccinations, supplies, required for travel to Uganda are not included in the total cost and must be purchased at your own personal expense. You will need to have Hepatitis B, Hepatitis A vaccine, typhoid, yellow fever and malaria prophylaxis for this trip. A visa is required to travel to Uganda ($50).  You can visit the CDC website to view required immunizations. 
 
What are the eligibility requirements?  

We welcome students from ALL SON ABSN programs who meet the following criteria:
  1. ABSN Program: must complete at least two semesters in their program of study  
  2. Be in good academic standing from time of application through time of trip, as defined as:
  • Passing all courses (with 3.0 or higher) in your program of study
Will I receive any course credit for this experience?    

ABSN, ADN & Veteran’s may receive up to 45 clinical hours in satisfaction of the NURS 4117 Epidemiology & Community Health clinical practicum requirements. 
 
Please note you will be required to participate in 3-5 pre-trip team meetings to help prepare you for your trip as well as nightly de-briefing sessions during the trip and a post trip meeting. For those out of state, you will be able to join meetings via WebEx or Blackboard collaborate. to help you get the most out of your international experience there are a number of assigned readings, video presentations on history, socioeconomic, culture, health problems and challenges of the host country and its people. ABSN students will prepare education posters and handouts and translate to the local language prior to the trip. SON Graduate students will attend information sessions on commonly encountered health problems, tropical disease and treatments in the host country.

What to Do When You Login:


The system will prompt you to select which semester you would like to attend your international clinical elective. You will not choose by elective block, but rather put Fall, Spring, or Summer depending on the month you will be going abroad. Once you select a semester you are required to enter a location.Please ALWAYS chose Washington DC as your location. Once you get to the application form you will be able to enter the name of the international elective site/sites you will be choosing.
