Spanish and Community Engagement in Costa Rica (five weeks)

*6-credit GW Spanish course run through the International Center for Development Studies in San Jose, Costa Rica

The International Center for Development Studies (ICDS), in conjunction with the Universidad Latina de Costa Rica, offers a unique optional summer program that prepares students for complete immersion in the fall semester courses at GW's host institutions in Chile or who continue on to do ICDS´ Fall Program.

Summer Spanish Intensive Program
The Spanish for Development Studies course also aims to introduce students to Central and Latin American issues and progressively develop their understanding of the region. Topics include cultural diversity, economic and trade integration, security, foreign relations, poverty and sustainable development.

By encouraging use of Spanish in the classroom, at home with the host family and in daily interactions with local people, the summer study program helps students become more confident with their language skills and prepares them to study alongside local university students.

Accomodations

Students are placed in homestays with carefully chosen Costa Rican families. The homestay includes a furnished private room, two meals a day and laundry service.

Excursions

Two weekend excursions are included in the summer program. Past groups of students have gone to Punta Leona on the Pacific Coast and Canales Tortuguero on the Atlantic Coast.

Field trips

Students benefit from fascinating field trips and visits to sites of interest related to the subject and the country's current events, such as the Costa Rican Congress, Electoral Tribunal, Supreme Court, Ombudsman Office, Inter-American Human Rights Court, University for Peace, and others.
