Campeche is one of the 31 states Mexico. Located in Southeast Mexico, it is bordered by the states of Yucatán to the north east, Quintana Roo to the east, and Tabasco to the south west. The state capital, also called Campeche, was declared a World Heritage Site in 1997. The formation of the state began with the city, which was founded in 1540 as the Spanish began the conquest of the Yucatán Peninsula. During the colonial period, the city was a rich and important port, but declined after Mexico’s Independence. The state has important Mayan and colonial sites but they are not as well known or visited as others in the Yucatán.

This project will focus on the cultural and nature based tourism gems of the area. There is significant importance in these sites but much is lost as tourists drive by on their way to and from Cancun. The project will focus on working with the local communities, tourism entreprenuers and local government to identify and enhance their ability to use tourism as a tool for economic growth, as well as social and environmental preservation.
