Program Description:

Petitioning a Non-GW Approved Program

The Office for Study Abroad provides students with a list of approved study abroad programs.  These programs have been assessed for compatibility with the educational expectations and academic requirements of The George Washington University.  As such, students interested in attending a program not on GW's list of approved study abroad programs may petition that program, but must provide substantial documentation.

In the petition application, students should make a strong and clear argument about the unique academic reasons that the petitioned program meets their individual priorities.  In addition, students should demonstrate that they have researched all related GW Approved programs and state specific reasons why such programs do not meet their individual goals.  Petition decisions are based on the merits of each student's individual and unique arguments.

Eligibility

Students submitting a petition must:

  1. Have a 2.75 GPA
  2. Completed 45 credits
  3. Be in good judicial and academic standing
  4. Have a declared major
  5. Completed GW CATS request for each course to be taken abroad
  6. Identified an accredited program which allows a student to earn a minimum of  15 credits for a semester and 30 credits for a year
  7. Meet any additional eligibility requirements for the program under consideration

Application Process & Deadlines

To petition a program, a student must send an email to your OSA advisor through the staff page of this site and make an appointment.  The OSA advisor will then contact the student via email with general questions for the advising appointment.  During the advising appointment, the student discusses his/her program of interest and receives online access to proceed with the Study Abroad Petition Application. Petitions are rarely granted so students will also speak to their OSA advisor about a back-up program on the OSA list of approved programs.

Petitions are NOT reviewed on a rolling basis, but instead are assessed once a semester by the Study Abroad Academic Advisory Committee.  Students must submit their Petition Application by midnight on the deadline day listed below.  The Study Abroad Advisory Committee will then review the applications and send notification of the decisions to the students.  Petition applications are not guaranteed, and every student should apply to a GW-approved program as a back up

Students whose petitions are approved should follow the remaining study abroad deadlines and policies as outlined on the OSA website and materials.  Please note that GW's policies regarding program fees, application of GW financial assistance and scholarships, and credit requirements remain in effect for approved petitions.
