GW Exchange Program Scholarship

The GW Exchange Program Scholarship is a competitive award that takes both merit and financial need into consideration. Recipients will receive awards up to $1,500 for semester study on a the GW Chile program or one of the following GW Exchange programs:

Students who are awarded the GW Exchange Scholarship will be expected to post entries on our Wordpress Blog site at least once a week discussing their experience living and studying at a GW Exchange or GW Chile host university.  Students who visit the Office for Study Abroad website will be able to follow the blog and learn more about what it is like to be immersed at an abroad partner institution and different culture. Through the Exchange and GW Chile programs, GW students directly enroll at partner universities worldwide. These programs promote the internationalization of the GW campus as it allows students from partner universities around the world to study at GW.


All applicants must meet the following criteria at the time of application:
  1. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0;
  2. Meets all study abroad eligibility requirements;
  3. Plans to attend one of the GW Exchange Programs listed above or GW Chile:

Application Requirements

Submit a 500- to 750-word typed essay on one topic from the following options:

  • As a study abroad student preparing to engage with a new culture and country, it is important to be aware and mindful of current events and issues in your proposed host country. Please identify a current issue in your host-country (social, political, environmental, etc.) and review 1-2 newspaper or journal articles to learn more about how this issue may be affecting the city and/or country where you propose to study abroad. Then, address the following prompts. Please provide citations for your resources.

    * Identify the host-country issue and how it is affecting host-country nationals.

    * How do you anticipate this issue will impact your study abroad experience, and why?

    * Please don't forget to cite your sources.


Students' scholarship applications will be reviewed in May for the fall semester and December for the spring semester. These are highly competitive scholarships and will only be granted to a select number of students.

Students who are studying abroad for the academic year must apply for a GW scholarship for each semester they are abroad.  If you are awarded a scholarship in the fall semester it does not automatically transfer to the spring; you will need to reapply for the scholarship in the spring semester.
