Supplemental Scholarship

The Supplemental Scholarship is a competitive, need based scholarship. This award provides aid to Federal Work-Study (FWS) recipients, who must forfeit this particular source of aid when they study abroad, up to the amount of the maximum amount of their FWS per semester.


All applicants must meet the following criteria at the time of application:
  1. Meets all study abroad eligibility requirements
  2. Currently receiving a Federal Work-Study award and working at the time of application in a paid FWS or non-FWS position.

Application Requirements

All application materials must be submitted online.  Paper submissions will not be accepted.

1. Most recent financial aid award letter indicating Federal Work-Study

2. Letter from current supervisor (FWS or non FWS) certifying current number of hours worked per week, hourly remuneration rate, and contact information. The recommendation letter requirement on your Supplemental Scholarship online application is for you to request a letter from your current supervisor (FWS or non FWS).  Letters from professors or others who are not your current supervisor will not be accepted.  



  • Fall semester: March 15
  • Spring semester: December 1


These are highly competitive scholarships and will only be granted to a select number of students applying to one of the aforementioned programs.

Students who are studying abroad for the academic year must apply for a GW scholarship for each semester they are abroad.  If you are awarded a scholarship in the fall semester it does not automatically transfer to the spring, you will need to reapply for the scholarship in the spring semester.
